Water running, or a gas smell? Do not wait on an email. Shut off the main water valve and call a local plumbing company directly.

If you smell gas, leave the building first, then call 911 or the gas utility from outside. If sewage is backing up, stop using water and keep people and pets away from it.

About your plumbing

The plumbing inquiry form asks for the problem, your zip code and the timing in one pass, so we can reply without a round of questions.

Plumbing companies: read the page for plumbing companies first, then email hello@hyreplumber.com.

What can HyrePlumber help with?

  • Which job you need. A symptom can point at a different job than it seems to. The plumbing services lay out each one.
  • Reading a quote. The pricing model, the diagnostic fee, the permit and the change-order rule. See what sets the price of plumbing work.
  • Checking a license. Which board licenses plumbers where you live, and how to look one up. How to choose a plumber covers it.
  • The tools and corrections. How a calculator works and where it stops, the source behind a figure, or a fix to a page.

What can HyrePlumber not help with?

  • Emergencies. For running water, a local plumber. For a gas smell, 911 or the gas utility, called from outside.
  • Sending anyone. We are not a plumbing company and have nobody to send, at any hour.
  • Diagnosing your plumbing. Nobody here has seen it, and a guess by email is not a diagnosis.
  • Pricing a job. We price no jobs and publish no national average price.
  • Recommending a company. We publish no rankings and no reviews. How plumbing companies will be checked explains why.
  • What your local code requires. Codes are adopted and amended locally. Your building department decides.

What should I do before I write?

Find your main shut-off valve and check that it still turns. Then photograph where the water shows up, with the date, and note when it started and what changed just before.

If you have a quote, send it as it is, not a summary. What sets the price shows the lines worth checking, and the plumbing FAQ answers other common questions.

HyrePlumber is an independent plumbing information site published at hyreplumber.com. It is not a plumbing company.

Questions people ask

Can HyrePlumber send a plumber to me?
No. HyrePlumber is not a plumbing company, employs no plumbers and dispatches nobody. For a visit, call local plumbing companies directly. If water is running, shut off the main first. Plumbing emergencies has the first steps.
I smell gas. What should I do?
Leave the building now, without using switches, phones or flames inside. From outside, call 911 or your gas utility. Do not go back in until they say it is safe. We cannot help with a gas leak, and no one should look for it themselves.
Can you tell me what my job will cost?
No, because we have not seen the house, the access or the pipe, and we publish no national average. We can explain what a quote should list, so two quotes can be compared. Start with what sets the price of plumbing work.
A plumber did work I am unhappy with. Can you help?
Not directly: we have no relationship with the company and no standing in the dispute. Write down what was agreed and what was done, and raise it with the board that issued the plumber’s license. How to choose a plumber explains how to find that board.
How do I report an error on the site?
Email hello@hyreplumber.com with the page address and what you think is wrong, with a source if you have one. Plumbing code is adopted and amended locally, so a statement can be right in one state and wrong in the next. We fix what we get wrong and say so.
How do I have my data deleted?
Email hello@hyreplumber.com and say which details you mean. No reason is needed. We delete them and confirm when it is done. The privacy policy explains what we store and for how long.
