A drip is a volume problem before it is a plumbing-bill problem. EPA WaterSense says a faucet dripping at one drip per second can waste more than 3,000 gallons a year, which is about 8.2 gallons a day. Type that, or a measured gallons-per-day, then type $/gallon off your bill. The dollar is bill impact only.

How this calculator works

The calculator multiplies the gallons per day you type by 365, then by the dollar-per-gallon you type:

annual gallons = gpd × 365
annual cost    = annual gallons × your $/gallon

If gallons per day is 0, there is nothing to price. If the rate is 0, the result is still gallons, with a prompt to type $/gallon. That empty rate is deliberate. A national water price would hide the only local fact this tool can honestly use: the volumetric charge on your bill.

The 8.2 gpd default is not a measurement of your faucet. It is the WaterSense planning figure for one drip per second, derived from "more than 3,000 gallons per year." 8.2 × 365 rounds to 2,993 gallons in this engine, which is the case the tests lock. Overwrite 8.2 if you timed the drip.

The WaterSense drip at a rate you typed

Gallons per day 8.2, rate $0.01 per gallon. Annual volume 2,993 gal/year. Cost about $30 / year at the rate you typed. That is the arithmetic this engine is tested against. Replace $0.01 with the number from your bill and the gallons still sit at 2,993 unless you change the drip.

The same drip with no rate yet

Leave rate at $0. Volume is still 2,993 gal/year. Cost reads as a prompt to enter $/gallon. That is not a cheaper leak. It is a leak whose bill impact has not been priced. The honest empty state is gallons without a fake dollar.

The one where the water bill misleads

Someone reads "about $30 a year" and leaves a drip under the kitchen sink because the water is cheap. The WaterSense figure is volume. The cabinet, the particle-board bottom, and the mould are not in the $30. A toilet flapper that silently refills can also be ten times the faucet drip, and pasting 8.2 gpd onto that toilet because this page mentioned 3,000 gallons is the other way the naive answer fails. Type the measured gpd. Read the note under the dollar.

What changes the result

Gallons per day moves the annual volume linearly. Doubling the drip doubles the gallons. It does not double the finish damage. A slow leak that has already been into a cabinet for a season is a larger problem at 4 gpd than a new drip at 8 gpd that you will actually fix.

The rate is the only price in the model. Sewer volume charges, if they ride on the same gallons, belong in that rate when they are real. A drought surcharge that applies above a threshold belongs only if this leak is what pushes you over it, which this form cannot know.

Nothing on the form asks where the leak is. A drip at a faucet aerator and a pinhole in a slab are both gallons. They are not the same job. Location lives on the emergency checker and on the homepage triage, not in this multiplication.

Local considerations

Water and sewer tariffs are local. That is why the rate is a box you type, not a state dropdown. A state average without a dated survey would be a fake localiser. Your bill, or the rate schedule your utility publishes, is the local data.

Some bills are in CCF, some in 1,000-gallon units, some in cubic metres. Convert to $/gallon once. Do not type the monthly total into the rate box; that would treat the meter fee as if it were caused by the drip.

When not to use this

Do not use this as a quote, an insurance figure, or a reason to leave water running. It cannot see the cabinet, the slab, or how long the leak has been going.

Do not use the WaterSense 3,000 gallons as a diagnosis of your fixture. It is a planning drip, not a camera under your sink.

Do not use a rate you found in a roundup of "average US water prices." If you cannot name the tariff, leave the rate at 0.

The engine multiplies the gallons you type by 365 and rounds, so 8.2 gpd prints as 2,993 gal/year rather than a marketing 3,000. If you have a measured drip, type that number instead.
How do I get gallons per day from a drip I can see?
Time it. Catch drips in a measuring cup for a minute, convert to gallons, multiply by 1,440 minutes in a day. Or put a bucket under it for an hour and scale. A toilet that runs is often far more than a faucet drip; do not paste 8.2 gpd onto a flapper leak just because this page mentioned WaterSense.
How do I turn my water bill into $/gallon?
Find the volumetric charge, not the fixed meter fee. If the bill is $6.00 per 1,000 gallons, that is $0.006 per gallon. If it is $4.50 per CCF (100 cubic feet), 1 CCF is 748 gallons, so $4.50 ÷ 748 ≈ $0.006 per gallon. Sewer charges billed on the same volume belong in the rate if they actually move with the leak. The fixed monthly service charge does not.
Why is the rate default $0?
Because a made-up national water price would be the most tempting fake number on this page. Empty rates stay $0 and the result is gallons only, plus a prompt to type $/gallon. That is more honest than a blog average from another city.
Is $30 a year a reason to ignore a drip?
No. This dollar is bill impact only. A slow leak under a sink rots the cabinet, grows mould, and can ruin the floor. Those lines are not in the arithmetic. A $30 water line next to a $800 cabinet is how this tool is supposed to be read, not as permission to wait.
What about a leak I cannot see?
A meter that moves with every fixture off is a volume leak somewhere. That gallons-per-day can be typed here once you have it. Finding it is detection, not this multiplication. Warm slab, hiss in a wall, or a water heater jacket that is wet from the tank body are different jobs. A tank-body leak is a replace on the repair-vs-replace tool, after you stop the water.
Does a running toilet use the same 8.2 gpd figure?
No. A worn flapper can waste tens or hundreds of gallons a day. WaterSense lists toilet flappers with dripping faucets as common household leaks, and the household total they cite is far larger than one faucet drip. Type a measured gpd for the toilet, or time the fill. Do not reuse the faucet drip as a stand-in.
Can I use this number on an insurance claim?
No. This is household arithmetic on figures you typed. It cannot see how long the leak ran, whether it was sudden, or what your policy does with seepage. Do not file this page.
Is a drip a plumbing emergency?
Not on the emergency checker. Flooding, sewage, or no water is. A drip still wastes water and can rot a cabinet, so schedule it. If you cannot stop the water, that is no longer a drip. Use the emergency tool, then the shutoff.
