Sewer repair or replace, starting with the camera, not the age

A collapsed or missing section is a replace of that run, not a cable. A single backup with a clear camera is not a new sewer. Repeated backups and an offset joint are a pattern. This is a camera finding plus the two quotes you type, not a diagnosis of your yard.

The camera is the argument, not the year of the house Finding plus backup history, then an optional 50% heuristic on the two quotes. City vs private lateral is a local line. HyrePlumber does not dig sewers.

Pick what the camera showed, whether backups have repeated, the age of the line if you know it, and the two quotes. A collapse returns replace of that run regardless of age. A clear camera after one backup leans clean and watch. Two or more reasons (repeat backups, offset, a 50-year line with a finding, a repair that is half a replacement) lean replace, still as a camera-and-quote job, not this page's stamp. HyrePlumber does not camera lines and does not dig sewers.

Camera finding, then the two quotes

A collapse short-circuits the rest. Nothing is emailed. Not a diagnosis of your yard.

0 if unknown. Age without a finding is not a replace rule.

Cable, roots, a spot repair. 0 until you have paper.

The run in question, not a national sewer average. 0 until you have paper.

What this assumed

Camera finding plus backup history, not a diagnosis. City vs private lateral is local. HyrePlumber does not dig sewers.

How this calculator works

There is no dollar output that is "the right sewer." The engine collects reasons, then picks a lean:

if collapse: replace (or spot-repair) that run
else if clear + once: lean repair / clean
else if 2+ reasons: lean replace, still a camera-and-quote job
else if roots: lean repair with a plan
else: not enough to call

Reasons that can stack: collapse (also a hard branch), offset or belly, repeated backups, age 50 or more with a finding that is not "clear," and a repair quote that is 50% or more of the replace quote when both are typed. A single backup with no camera is not a sewer replacement.

The 50% line is a heuristic, the same shape as the water-heater tool, not a law. A collapse is a replace of that run even if someone would cable it for $200.

What each input means

Inputs on this tool, in the order they appear on the form.
InputWhat it is actually asking
Camera finding What the report actually called: unknown, clear, roots, offset/belly, or collapse. This is a finding, not a diagnosis of the yard. "Unknown" is the honest default until you have footage.
Backups Once versus repeated on the same line. Repeated backups are a pattern. A neighbour's backup on a different lateral is not this box.
Age Years of the line if you know them. 50-plus with a finding is one reason, not a rule. 0 if unknown.
Repair quote Cable, root-cut, or a spot repair, from a bid. 0 until you have paper. We do not ship a national clean-out price.
Replace quote Replacement of the run in question, from a bid. Dig, lining, or bursting are methods. 0 until you have paper. No national sewer average is shipped.

Worked examples

Including one where the naive answer misleads, which is the example most calculators leave out.

A collapse on the report

Finding collapse, backups once or repeat, any age, any quotes. Verdict is replace (or spot-repair that run). A collapse is not a snake job. The cheap cable does not cancel the missing pipe. This is the case the engine is built to halt on, the same way a leaking tank body is a replace on the water-heater tool.

One backup, camera clear

Finding clear, backups once, age 40, repair $350, replace $12,000. Verdict leans repair / clean. A one-off with a clear camera is not a new sewer. Keep the footage. If it happens again on the same line, that is a different row.

The one where age-without-a-camera misleads

No camera (unknown), backups once, age 62, and a blog "average sewer replacement" typed into the replace box. The naive reading is "the house is old, replace it." The engine still says there is not enough to call, unless you have also ticked repeat backups and a repair that is half of that fake replace number. A 62-year line with no footage is a reason to scope it, not a reason to dig the yard on a national average. Get the camera. Ask who owns the lateral. Type the two quotes from paper, not from a roundup.

What changes the result

Changing the finding from unknown to collapse is the whole decision. Changing it from unknown to clear, with one backup, is the opposite lean. Two reasons are what flips "lean replace." Repeat backups plus an offset is enough even if age is 20. Age 50 plus a finding that is not clear is one of those reasons, not a stand-alone rule.

Quotes only enter as the 50% heuristic, and only when both are greater than 0. A $0 replace box does not mean replacement is free. It means untyped. Do not invent a city average to make the heuristic fire.

Lining versus open cut does not have a dropdown. If the bid is a liner, that number is still the replace (or repair) box that matches the work. This page will not pick a method.

Local considerations

City versus private lateral is local, and it is the one local fact that actually changes who pays. Some cities own to the main, some to the property line, some to a cleanout. This form will not ship a 50-city table, because the table would be wrong the month a ordinance changes. Ask public works which segment is yours before you treat a street-side quote as your invoice.

Septic is a different system. EPA's septic pages are for tanks and drainfields. If you are not on a municipal sewer, this camera conversation is still a pipe conversation, but the tank and the field are not in these boxes.

Permit, easement, and whether a liner is accepted are local. Labour is local. None of that is a state dropdown that changes the verdict.

When not to use this

Do not use this as a diagnosis, a bid, or a reason to skip the camera. It cannot see the belly, the easement, or the city's side of the cleanout.

Do not use it while sewage is on the floor. That is the emergency checker, then a plumber who handles sewage, then this page.

Do not type a national "average sewer replacement cost" into the replace box. If you cannot name who priced that run, leave it at 0.

HyrePlumber does not camera lines, does not dig sewers, and does not dispatch anyone. Matching is still being built.

Questions this calculator answers

Should I repair or replace my sewer line?
If the camera shows a collapse or a missing section, replace or spot-repair that run. If the camera is clear after one backup, lean clean, not a new sewer. Roots come back unless the joint is actually fixed. Age without a finding is not a rule.
Do I need a camera before I decide?
Yes, for any decision that is not "snake it once and see." A cable without a recording is a guess you will pay for again. Ask for the footage. A company that scopes lines will have it.
Is a sewer backup an emergency?
Sewage in the house is a stop on the emergency checker: keep people off it, do not run other drains, call someone who handles sewage, and your insurer if it entered living space. That is contamination, not a clog you keep plunging. This page is the money conversation after the backup is stopped.
Who owns the lateral, me or the city?
It depends on the city, and sometimes on which side of the cleanout you are on. This page will not invent the line. Ask public works which segment is private before you price a street-side replacement as if it were yours.
What does "roots" mean for the call?
Roots at a joint are a leak in the pipe, not a tree problem that a cable solves forever. The engine leans repair with a plan: cut the roots, then decide whether the joint gets a liner, a spot repair, or a replace of that run. Roots without a plan are a subscription to the same backup.
Is lining the same as replace?
Lining and pipe bursting are replacement methods that avoid some trenching. They still need a camera, access, and a bid that says which defects they can actually span. This form treats "replace" as the structural decision, not as a SKU for dig vs no-dig.
What is the 50% heuristic?
If you typed both quotes and the repair is 50% or more of replacement, that is one reason among others, the same shape as the water-heater tool. It is not a law. A cheap cable on a collapsed run is still the wrong job.
Does age alone mean I should replace?
No. A 50-year line with a finding is in the conversation. A 50-year line with a clear camera after one backup is not a new sewer on this form. Clay, cast iron and orangeburg fail in different ways. Year is a prior. The camera is the argument.
What if I have no camera and no quotes yet?
The verdict will say there is not enough to call. That is the honest empty state. Do not fill in a blog "average sewer replacement cost" as the replace box. 0 is more honest than a fake city price.
Is this a diagnosis of my yard?
No. It cannot see the belly, the easement, the tree, or whether the city owns the far side of the cleanout. HyrePlumber does not camera lines and does not dig sewers.
Does HyrePlumber perform sewer work?
No. Matching is still being built. The enquiry form is not a dispatch line. If sewage is in the house, that is the emergency page and a local plumber now, from a number you look up.
